FNA Thyroid HMI Experience 2011
Summary of fine needle aspiration biopsy results performed at Houston Medical imaging January 1, 2011 through October 31, 2011.
Technique: The study is performed under direct ultrasound guidance using a 13 MHz probe. The skin was prepped and 1% buffered lidocaine utilized for local analgesia. Two to four passes are made with a 25 gauge 1.5 inch needle. Slides are sprayed with Cytofix and submitted for analysis. Dr. Randall Stenoien performs all procedures.
278 biopsies are performed on 220 patients. The number of major complications is 0 (in 6 years, there have been 3 painful hematomas, all of which were managed conservatively). 2/220 patients did complain of minor throat pain persisting over 24-48 hours.
